What's in a name?

rabbet[rab-it]The recessed channel cut into the back of the frame that holds the glass, mat, artwork, and backing board.
hole [hohl] The aperture or opening in the frame that displays the artwork.
"Down the Rabbit Hole" An idiom which refers to getting deep into something or ending up somewhere strange. Lewis Carroll introduced this phrase as the title for chapter one of his 1865 novel, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Alice's decent down the rabbit hole marks her transition from the ordinary world into a surreal dreamscape.
